Music, Literature, and Architecture

Artists and writers of Enlightenment used satire to comment on European values. This allowed them to explore human faults in a powerful way. Artists would use wit humor to ridicule various ideas and customs. Some artist would use their art to express their political views. William Hogarth used satire in his painting Canvassing for Votes.

Music
The main genre of music during this time was classical. Composers would get inspiration from music heard in the church and music written by other composers. Composers would often write music with instruments like the recorder, the tambourine, the Irish harp, the viol, trumpets, and cornets.
Literature
Writers wrote more about their beliefs. Writers like Voltaire and Jonathan Swift wrote with satire. Also writers didn’t focus on the church but sometimes wrote against the church. People started attending plays and reading poetry.
Architecture
The architectural style had an emphasis on symmetry, geometry, and proportion. Buildings featured domes and semicircular arches. Most buildings had elaborate artwork painted on the ceilings and walls. Churches would also have large steeples.
