During the wake of the Scientific Revolution new ways of thinking were promoted. Peoiple sought new ideas into the uderluying beliefs regarding government. The enlightenment movement reached its height in the mid 1700’s and brought great change to many aspects of western civilization.
Getting StartedEnlightenment started fromm some key ideas put forth by two English political thinkers of the 1600’s, which were Thomas Hobbes and John Locke.
Hobbes thought humans were naturally selfish, and with out government to keep people in order things would not be right, he called peoples agreemment to creating a government the Social Contract and Absolute Monarchy
Locke had a more positive view on human nature, ha believed that people could learn fron experience and improve themselves. Also that people had natural ability to govern themselves and look after welfare and society. Locke was in favor of Self government.
Natural Rights According to Locke all people are born free and equal with three natural rights, which are Life, Liberty, and proporty. Locke bleived that the purpose of government was to protect these rights and if government fails to do so then citizens have the right to overthrow it.
More Ideas The ideas of government by poular consent and the right to rebel helped inpire stryggles for Librity in Europe and the Americas. Enlightenment swept throgh Europes royal Courts, and mosst people believed that the best form of governments was a Monarchy in which the ruler respected peoples rights. Some Monarchs even embraced the new ideas of Enlightenment and made reforms that reflected the spirit of Enlightenment. They were known as enlightened despots.
